New parliament goes into session tomorrow

DHAKA, Jan 28, 2014 (BSS)- The 1st session of the 10th parliament will begin at 6 pm tomorrow at the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban.

President M Abdul Hamid summoned the session on 13 January as per Article 72 (1) of the constitution.

As per the constitution, President Abdul Hamid will address the first session of the parliament. The cabinet has already approved the speech of the President.

Besides, as per the rules, the speaker and deputy speaker of the parliament will be elected in the first working day.

Parliament secretariat sources told BSS that all preparations have been taken for the first session of the new parliament.

A meeting at the parliament secretariat with senior secretary Ashraful Makbul recently decided to take a number of steps on the occasion of the first session.

Following the decision, security measures have been tightened and the JS Bhaban beautified with flower and vegetable tubs. The parliament officials would not be allowed to carry more than one mobile phone sets as pert of the beefed up security.

Sitting arrangements in the House and all lifts in the parliament building have been scrutinized.

Bugles would be played during the entry of the President into the House before his deliberation.

The parliament secretariat has taken steps to allocate MP hostel rooms in favour of the newly elected lawmakers.

The tenure of the 9th parliament ended on January 24 while the first session of that parliament sat on January 25 in 2009.

The concluding session of the last parliament ended on November 20, 2013. The last parliament had a record number of 418 working days and passed the highest ever 271 bills.

The main opposition BNP attended the last parliament sessions for only 76 days and Opposition Leader Begum Khaleda Zia was present in the House for only 10 days.
