Month-long folk festival begins in Sonargaon on Feb 14

DHAKA, Feb 12, 2014 (BSS) – Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor today said the government has undertaken various initiatives to protect country’s folk art and heritage.

“To this end, recommendations have been made to increase allocations for the cultural affairs ministry in the next financial year,” he said at a press conference at Press Information Department (PID) on the occasion of Fine Arts Fair and Folk Festival 2014.

Folk and Fine Arts Foundation will hold the month-long festival on the premises of Fold Art and Craft Museum in Sonargaon under Narayanganj from February 14.

The cultural affairs minister will inaugurate the festival in the morning on February 14.

The minister said the objective of the fair is to introduce folk products to the people in a bid to preserve the fold arts and heritage.

He stressed the need for fair prices of folk goods and said the government has a plan to hold such more fairs in rural areas to encourage folk art and craft.

As part of this, a SAARC art exhibition will be held in Bandarban, the minister added.

Cultural Affairs Secretary Dr Ranajit Kumar Biswas,Additional Secretary Mahbuba Mashkur and Folk and Fine Arts Foundation Director poet Rabindra Gop also spoke at the press conference.

Forty-four craftsmen from different areas of the country will make different folk products on the spot in the fair in Sonargaon.

Besides, there will be cultural functions, including different types of folk songs and indigenous dances. Eight seminars will also be held during the festival.

The fair will have 184 stalls.
